Duren-professionalheadshot-1Duren Thompson, Instructional Technology MS student, has been selected as a featured presenter during the 8th Annual Flipped Learning Conference this July.

The conference, FlipCon2015, is a Flipped Learning Network (FLN) event. FLN explains their mission as providing educators with the skills and resources needed to successfully implement Flipped Learning. This is a pedagogical approach in which direct instruction is moved from the group space to the individual learning environment and the group learning environment is transformed into a dynamic, interactive problem-solving space.

Thompson submitted a presentation proposal for FlipCon2015 titled “Learning Through Doing: Models for Flipped PD.” The presentation is an interactive demonstration focused on flipping professional development for educators. Participants will explore and discuss three models for training educators in the flipped learning approach piloted with adult literacy practitioners, and make connections from that project to their personal practice. After peer-review, the proposal submission was not only accepted, but also chosen as a featured session. This honor includes free registration, a larger audience, a highlight in the program, and streaming to all Virtual Conference attendees.

Thompson has been a professional developer for educators since 1997, with a heavy focus in distance, online, and technology enhanced learning since 2000. She is an advocate for interactive webinars and currently a master’s student in Instructional Technology and a Program Coordinator with with the Center for Literacy, Education, and Employment.

Current Occupation

Instructional Designer – Content Manager
Apple Inc.

During most of the Instructional Technology program, I worked for the state at Walters State Community College as the Director of Educational and User Technologies. With the experience I gained at Walters State and the the skills that I gained through the Instructional Technology program at UT, I was asked to help change the world at Apple as an instructional designer. I am blessed to be working for an amazing company with a heart for the classroom.

Personal Interests

I like to spend my time playing the guitar and studying personal productivity, history, and theology. I married Lydia—my college sweetheart— and we have two children – Sophia Grace (3 and 1/2 years) and Benjamin Luke (1 and 1/2 years). During the fall, I cheer emphatically for Volunteer football.

Future/Vocational Goals

I want to continue to empower educators with the tools they need to impact future generations. Today, we have more access to rich educational resources than any time in human history yet so many of our classrooms are deprived of these resources. Why? There are many roadblocks. Some of these roadblocks are logistical, trivial, political, or financial in nature – but the biggest roadblock is fear. Educational technology is liberating and empowering classrooms and minds around the world. The only thing to fear is having students disenfranchised from these learning opportunities and resources. My goal is to continue to play a role in injecting classrooms in America with these tools, strategies, and resources.

What sold you on this program/department/university?

Among the other programs and universities I came across, the faculty and staff in the Instructional Technology program at UT was much more personable, responsive, and engaging. My advisor has been a very valuable resource and took sincere interest in my professional goals and helped me take full advantage of the program. I simply did not receive this at other institutions I considered.

What do you think has been the most rewarding/challenging about this program?

One of the most rewarding things about being apart of this program is meeting, connecting, and networking with my classmates. We have had a broad representation of professionals in primary, secondary, and higher education institutions, the private sector, government, and even the military. These individuals became more than just classmates – they have become valuable professional contacts and even friends.

The Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling wants to congratulate the graduates from each of our twelve programs who earned their degrees during the summer and fall semesters of 2014.

Nine Instructional Technology students worked collaboratively with the city of Cleveland, Tennessee to create an Ethical Needs Analysis Report as part of the Smart Communities Initiative (SCI).

SCI, from the Office of Service-Learning, brings faculty and students together with surrounding areas and municipal groups who focus on issues to improve the region’s environmental sustainability, economy, and social integrity.

Lisa Yamagata-LynchThrough SCI, students enrolled in Lisa Yamagata-Lynch‘s Professional Ethics in Instructional Technology summer course were able to take their academic knowledge and apply it to a real-world setting. They conducted an Ethical Needs Analysis for Collecting Citizen Input in order to develop a survey to collect data for Cleveland officials that would not endanger the privacy of citizens.

Yamagata Lynch says that the final report is being prepared for Cleveland and she hopes to share it soon, provided it is a public document.
